And that has caught the attention of a number of clubs across Europe, with Saints reportedly leading the race for his signature.

Swiss paper Blick say a scout from Southampton travelled to watch the Norwegian international in action last weekend.

And he was said to be taking plenty of notes as Elyounoussi turned in an impressive display as Basel beat Lausanne 4-1.

He scored one and set up another in the impressive away victory which saw Basel keep up the pressure on early leaders Young Boys at the top of the Swiss Super League.

Elyounoussi has also impressed in the Champions League this season, and scored another goal on Tuesday in the 2-0 win at Benfica.

Despite being under contract until 2021, it is understood officials at Basel are resigned to losing the player either in January or the end of this season.

They are aware of a growing number of clubs who have been watching him over the past through months, and would find it hard to turn down a decent fee for him.

In an ideal world they would want to keep Elyounoussi until the summer to help their battle to win the league this season.

But should a club come in with an offer of around £12million they could sell up next month when the transfer window opens.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino is still trying to evolve his side since taking charge at St Mary’s over the summer.

He has evaluated the strength of his current squad, and is now ready to make changes to help strengthen the club’s challenge for a top half finish.

But he will have to sell players to balance the books on the south coast, with the likes of Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini possibly surplus to requirements.
